Dear Member

Thanks to the support of many members, the British Reining Spring Show was an excellent start to the 2008 competition season.

Many thanks to all those who attended and helped at the show. Particularly the one-and-only Ring Steward, Janet Burwood, who, as well as collecting and entertaining the judge,  worked non-stop throughout Saturday and Sunday managing to keep competitors under firm control,  and everyone in the right place at the right time!

Thanks also to our commentator Peter Bernand, who has been a member of British Reining for many years and made his debut as a commentator at this show.

Thanks again to Jane Muir, who was Show Secretary. Jane is now recording all BR points and is also issuing Competition licences and FEI passports. She is a invaluable member of the B.R. Show Team!

And last, but not least, our Sponsors. Without their generous sponsorships we could not hold BR shows.

The Green-as-Grass and Rookie clinic was oversubscribed but David managed to accommodate everybody in the end.

It is encouraging to have so many new riders joining BR and competing in the first show. Thanks everybody!

Peter Lane

Chairman

Kuster BEF Groom Award 2007

Nominations for the prestigious Kuster BEF Groom Award are now open for 2007.  Download the nomination form here and nominate your super groom today.

The award, once again kindly sponsored by Frank Kuster, has gone from strength to strength over the last four years, attracting a wide range of grooms from all spheres of the equestrian industry including top flight competition, riding schools and welfare yards.

This year the fantastic first prize is £1000 of holiday vouchers, plus the Smash Hit Bronze Trophy which the winner will get to keep for a year. The Runners-up will not go away empty handed either with a second prize of £300 and third prize of £200.

New for 2007 there will also be "The Newcomer Award" to recognise the growing number of nominations for grooms who are new to the industry but already show exceptional dedication and commitment. This category will be open to any groom who has worked in the equestrian industry for a maximum of three years but has shown the potential to be a super groom! The winner of this award will win a unique print by artist Tim Nathan.

The winner of the main award and the newcomer award will be presented with their prizes at Olympia, the London International Horse Show during the evening performance on the 19th December. Both winners and their guests will be treated to an evening of hospitality at the show.

Ten finalists and their guests will be invited to attend the final judging day, including a champagne lunch, where they will be interviewed by our two judges, race horse trainer Richard Pitman and international dressage rider Sandy Phillips.

Entry is easy; grooms can nominate themselves or they can be nominated by an employer, owner or friend. Nomination forms are available to download here or by sending an SAE to the British Equestrian Federation. Entries to be sent to: Kuster BEF Groom Award 2007, British Equestrian Federation, Stoneleigh Park, Kenilworth, Warwickshire CV8 2RH. Alternatively they can be emailed to info@bef.co.uk. You do not need to return the official form but all information requested should be supplied.

The competition is open to all grooms whether from a local riding school or Olympic yard and entries from those who have been nominated in previous years are very much encouraged.

Entries close 26th November.

Past winners are:

  • 2006 Jackie Potts - eventing groom to William Fox-Pitt (pictured right)
  • 2005 Julie Barker - hunting groom to the Burton Hunt
  • 2004 Karen Hughes - eventing groom to Andrew and Bettina Hoy
  • 2003 Zanie Tanswell - eventing groom to Pippa Funnell

The British Reining Championship Show 6th and 7th October 2007
Which was held at Horse Creek Farm, March, Cambridgeshire.
The home of Sovereign Quarter Horses.

David Deptford promised us that the weather would be good for the first weekend in October, as this is traditionally a good weekend in the Fens.  He certainly was right and we had three good days of ideal riding weather.

On the Friday before the show a Pre-show clinic was held, especially for rookie and green as grass level riders. The clinic was full, with twelve participants and it seemed that they all learned a lot and picked up some tips from David, judging by the show results over the weekend.

On Saturday the day began with the sun rising promisingly over the windmills and the show commenced at 7.30am with paid-warm-ups. . These continued until 9am when classes began. As the commentator let us down at the last minute a variety of voices were heard over the mike as David, Peter Camilla and Kaaren all did a stint in the commentators box. David excelled in his role of commentator and enjoyed winding up his fellow open riders! All committee members were there in force to ensure the show ran smoothly. Carol Gatt worked gallantly as ring steward for both days and also presented the rosettes and prizes.. She was ably assisted by husband Mike, who did a sterling job on the gate. The emphasis on the Saturday was for green as grass riders and rookies, and during the day we held four classes with warm-ups before the classes for these competitors only.  There were always experienced riders on hand to help and give advice where needed.  Eleven classes in total were held on the Saturday and all were well supported and we did not finish until it was almost dark.

As promised by David (!) Sunday again proved to be a perfect day for the Championship.
There was a full slate of nine championship classes, starting with BR Green as grass and finishing with BR open.
Because the AQHA UK reining championship could not be held at The Hand equestrian Centre, four AQHA classes were held over Saturday and Sunday.  AQHA UK kindly donated all entry fees and also a further £200 to help towards the running costs of the show.

The smooth running of the show was guaranteed by having the trusty Jane Muir as Show secretary, who as everyone knows has been known to get stressed by incompetence of fellow organisers.  However this time she remained jovial and relaxed, enjoying the calm and convivial atmosphere at the show. (At times it MAY not have seemed to be quite as smooth running as it appeared…)

This show was the first time the British Reining Trailer was used. The trailer had been completely renovated to an extremely high standard by David Brimson, who was a coach builder in a previous life. David was still working on it right up the show and the only last minute hitch was signwriting of the BR Logo but that will be finished on its next outing.  The main use of the trailer this time was to display the new BR Merchandise which ranges from hats, polo shirts, hoodies etc. along side “unusual” items such as Reiner’s Knickers! All ideal Christmas presents. Watch the Website for details of ordering these items, as we will be operating a mail order service.
The show could not have run without the generous sponsorship from nearly 20 people. This varied from sponsorship of individual classes to the cost of rosettes Also there were vouchers from the Worshipful Company of Saddlers, alongside  vouchers and prizes from the supporting Trade stands.

And last but not least we have to thank the Judge, Ferry De Moore from Holland, and his right hand man, Mick Carder, who is a well known and popular face at the shows. Also, Adam Heaton for acting as Bit and Tail judge, another well known and trusty supporter of British Reining.

Our only hitch…
Prizes for the Championship Classes were Director’s Chairs with the  backs  individualy printed for the winner of each category. Unfortunately the chairs arrived but the backs, (the vital bits) did not arrive until later despite, being ordered in September and sent by “Special Delivery” We can only blame the postal strike. They have now arrived and will be sent out to the winners this week.

And finally British Reining Council wishes to thank David and Sarah Deptford for hosting the show and to all British Reining members who supported the show. This was probably the best turn out of all British Reining shows, and the friendly and competitive atmosphere made a great finish to the 2007 Reining season.

FEI European Championship and NRHA Euroslide, Mooslargue August 2007

Our strong British Team and a few more riders from the UK made their way to France to compete in this important event.

The Team members representing Britain were this year

Francesca Sternberg
Doug Allen
Mark How
Tammy Greaves
David Gray (Reserve Rider)

After the concerns of how to get the horses out of the country due to the foot and mouth outbreak our team finally arrived at the show venue. Wednesday was the vet inspection and all our horses passed. They were now ready to go the FEI Team Event which was held on Thursday.

All of our riders gave their best and we ONLY missed the BRONZE MEDAL by half a point!!!

All of our riders qualified and rode in the individual FEI Championship Reining. Francesca Sternberg must have had one of her best rides ever in the individual finals and once again Tean GB missed the bronze by only half a point and placed 4th.

Depsite all the ifs (... if we had only had half a point more ... ) everybody did a great job, the team achieved a lot and was placed in the very top of the European Reining Scene.

Finally Mark How managed to turn it around on Sunday winning the NRHA Intermediate and Limited Open with his personal best score of 74!!!

Congratulations to all of you and in particular thank you to the horse owners who kindly supported our team with their horses, backing and personal effort!!!

Hi All,

This is I feel a very important issue for all western organisations and would appreciate input from anyone who might have something to contribute.

In my role as Chief Executive at the BEF for the council of British Reining, I deal with many issues which actually effect western riding in general and not just reining. I feel it is important on many issues to be operating as a joined up community through the official channels we have via BR’s membership of the BEF wherever possible.

A crucial issue that has been the subject of much of my work in recent times has been ‘the facilities issue’. It is well known amongst us that the amount of facilities available to us has depleted enormously over the past couple of years. This is mainly down to changes of surfaces. These have not only been unsuitable, but downright harmful to our much loved equines. I have been digging down amongst the powers that be, to try to find the best platform to voice our surfaces problems.
What I have come up with is, there is currently a research program underway instigated by The Animal Health Trust in Newmarket in consultation with British Dressage and the BEF relating to ‘the effects of surfaces on the joints of the horse’ After speaking to them I have been invited to visit the trust and give a presentation on behalf of British Reining regarding the surfaces issue. The most fortuitous aspect is that the vet that is heading up this project has actually worked in the USA as a veterinary surgeon specialising in the joints of the horse for five years, mainly with quarter horses !!

This is an opportunity not to be missed. What I would like is comments, opinions and case studies from anyone who has any input on the subject. A final outcome could mean not only a greater focus of the effects we are suffering right now but to levy a great deal more weight on my lobby to the BEF for greater support in providing more western friendly facilities.

David Brimson
